Councillors warn on bus services

PROPOSED changes to bus services at Culcheth could threaten their long-term viability, two councillors have warned.
Cllr Chris Vobe (right) and Cllr Matt Smith (left) are seeking urgent talks with bus company Network Warrington over their plans to change the route of the Number 19 service.
The changes will mean that bus will no longer travel via Hob Hey Lane and Common Lane, but instead enter Culcheth village via Wigshaw Lane.
This has led to complaints from a number of residents in the Hob Hey area, who say that the changes will present significant problems for bus users, particularly the elderly, who will have to walk greater distances to reach the nearest stop.
Cllr Vobe said: “We are very concerned at the changes planned by Network Warrington. We understand that one of the reasons behind the proposal is the safety issues presented when buses have to navigate the junction of Hob Hey Lane.
“However, re-routing the service via Wigshaw Lane will have significant implications for people in Hob Hey and Twiss Green, as well as for those attending the Christian Fellowship church.
“That is why we are asking for Network Warrington to halt their plans and sit around the table to discuss how these problems can be overcome.”
Cllr Smith said: “It is important that any changes to the bus service do not result in people – particularly the elderly – feeling stranded. For people living at the top of Common Lane, it will be a long walk to the nearest bus stop if the current route is changed.
“What’s more, we are concerned that these changes will result in a further reduction in the number of people using the Number 19 service. If that happens, it may threaten the long-term viability of our local bus service, and we are determined not to let that happen.”
