LIVEWIRE raised a staggering £10,000 for Sport Relief last weekend by holding a Swimathon and 12 hour Spinathon at Orford Jubilee and Woolston Neighbourhood Hubs.
The Swimathon raised much needed funds to help Sport Relief 2014, a biennial charity event from Comic Relief, in association with BBC Sport, which brings together the worlds of sport and entertainment to raise money to help vulnerable people in both the UK and in the world’s poorest countries.
Over 60 people took part in the 12 hour Spinathon held on Saturday at LiveWire’s Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub from 8am – 8pm involving 30 Spinning bikes. One LiveWire member and dedicated fund raiser Holli Barrett cycled for the whole 12 hours, with the session supervised by LiveWire’s Fitness Instructor Sharon Banister.
On Sunday the challenge moved from cycling to swimming, where 65 people swam 1.5km, 2.5km or 5km individually or as a team at Woolston Neighbourhood Hub. All swimmers were accompanied by friends and family who provided some much needed support and created a fantastic atmosphere. One team participating on the day spanned three generations; grandmother, mother and son.
Holli Barrett said after completing the full 12 hour SpinathonL “I really enjoyed today, the instructors kept everyone motivated and the event was ran very well, all for a great cause.”
Keith Maddock LiveWire’s Head of Neighbourhood Wellbeing said: “We were stunned and thrilled with the amount of members that signed up, to get active to raise money for this year’s Sport Relief and help change lives.
“Our Spinathon and Swimathon gave over 120 people from across Warrington the opportunity to set their own personal challenges and provided two jam packed days of fund raising.”
