How not to be a victim of crime

POLICE and Warrington Borough Council have teamed up to hand out advice on how to stay safe and secure.
Thursday, March 27 will see an event at Grappenhall Ex-Serviceman’s Club, in Chester Road, from 12 noon-4pm when local people can pick up tips about staying safe, avoiding becoming a victim of crime and discovering what activities are available locally.
The event has been organised following the recent spate of burglaries across the Grappenhall and Thelwall areas.
There will be free window and shed locks, purse bells and fact sheets on avoiding scams.
Giveaways will be provided on a first come–first served basis so it will pay to be early.
Cllr Kate Hannon (right) the council’s lead member for leisure, community and culture, said: “This is the first in a series of events to be held across South Warrington which aim to encourage residents to take some simple steps to reduce their risk of becoming a victim of crime.
“By providing simple information and advice, promoting resident Home Watch schemes and offering free safety equipment and security tips, south Warrington will be a safer and stronger community.”
Inspector Becky Stokes of Cheshire Police said: “We take all reports of burglary seriously and understand the impact that incidents such as
these can have on residents. Our officers have arrested and charged four people in connection with the recent spate and they are currently going through the court process.
“We are keen to reassure all residents that the police are here to prevent crimes as well as solve them, and we are delighted to form this partnership with Warrington Borough Council’s neighbourhood team to reach particularly our older and more isolated members of the community where ‘Fear of Crime’ levels are high.”
Also there on the day will be Trading Standards, Home Watch, Cheshire Fire Service, Healthy Ageing Team, Wellbeing Team, Disability Partnership, Warrington Voluntary Action, and many more.
