Sculpture will commemorate bombing

A COMMEMORATIVE sculpture dedicated to Warrington is currently being designed to mark the 20th anniversary of the IRA bombing and there are opportunities to be part of this lasting legacy.
During the past few months, school children from 20 schools across the borough created their own pieces of artwork, as part of a project that followed on from the 20th
anniversary commemorative event held in Bridge Street in March last year.
With “peace”, “hope”, “respect” and “the future” as their inspiration, the children used their creative talents to design individual pieces of artwork, which are now on display in each school and will become a feature of an exhibition at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery in March.
The art sessions were led by artists Andy and Sharon Shaw and Andy has been commissioned to use the children’s interpretations to create a sculpture that will be presented and placed in the town later this year.
Council chiefs are looking for businesses, individuals and community groups who would be interested in sponsoring the sculpture and would welcome any contributions.
Deputy leader Cllr Mike Hannon (pictured) said: “In the aftermath of the 1993 bombing, children came together and created the 12 discs that form part of the River of Life memorial in Bridge Street. I think it is very fitting that 20 years on, the next generation plays a similar role in creating a lasting legacy for the town.
“This is something that is very dear to not only my heart but for many others here in our town and I hope that people or businesses come forward and play a role in this important, community project.”
