New jobs created as firm expands

MORE than 20 new jobs will be created as a result of extensions to the giant Novelis aluminium recycling plant at Latchford Locks, Warrington.
Planning chiefs have approved the development off Thelwall Lane – despite objections from nearby residents.
They say the creation of 23 jobs, in addition to the 146 already existing on the site, and proposed sound insulation measures will ensure any additional noise created by the development will be well below existing noise levels.
Residents of Steers Close, Hamilton Close and Fulton Close lodged objections.
They claimed there would be an increase in noise and disturbance at a site which already generates traffic significantly above what would be appropriate.
Residents said there were existing noise, traffic and parking problems and that the extension would be out of character with the area and would cause increased air pollution.
The scheme involves installation of a new automotive scrap recycling facility in addition to the existing aluminium can recycling processes. An extension will be built, more than 200 metres from the nearest dwellings. It would be used on a 24-hour basis.
The existing plant has been in operation for at least 20 years and thdere has been an industrial use on the site since the 1940s.
The additional facilities will increase the capacity of the site from 180,000 tonnes a year to 210,000 tonnes.
Planning officers said there were a number of existing recycling buildings between the site of the proposed extension and the nearest houses.
There was unlikely to be an significant increase in heavy traffic.
