WARRINGTON Town stayed top of the Evo-Stik Division One North after ending their Ossett Town hoodoo with a 1-0 away win.
It was Warrington’s first ever win at Ossett’s Ingfield Stadium and was sweet revenge for their FA Cup exit earlier in the season.
A Jay McCarten free-kick after three minutes was the only goal of the game on a difficult playing surface.
McCarten, who is becoming something of a free kick specialist, rifled the ball home from just outside the box.
In blustery conditions and on a difficult playing surface there was little chance of flowing football with neither side creating many clear cut chances.
Josh Cook made one decent save to keep the hosts out while substitute Ash Ruane also tested the keeper.
In a nervy final few minutes Ben Wharton, who came off the bench in the second half for his first appearance since breaking his arm on the same ground in the FA Cup,
had a great chance to settle the game when through one on one with the keeper – but shot straight into the arms of the grateful shot stopper.
TEAM: Cook, Davies, Thompson, McKenna (Ruane) McCarten, Robinson, Gahgan (Wharton) Mannix (c) Bowen, Meakin (Newby) Metcalfe.
Subs: Kilheeney, Newby, Dawson, Wharton, Ruane.
Wire end hoodoo to stay top
