WARRINGTON Wolves have confirmed the signing of Kiwi-born prop Roy Asotasi from the start of the 2014 season, on a two-year deal from South Sydney Rabbitohs.
The 31-year-old’s career in the southern hemisphere has also seen him play for the Canterbury Bulldogs between 2002 and 2006 winning the NRL Premiership in 2004. He made his debut for the South Sydney Rabbitohs against the Sydney Roosters in 2007 and has gone on to make over 120 first team appearances for the Rabbitohs.
As a highly experienced forward both in the NRL and at international level Asotasi has captained the Rabbitohs, New Zealand and Samoa.
His representative honours span both his junior and senior career: Auckland under 16s, 18s; New Zealand under 18s; Junior Kiwis (2000-01); 24 Tests for New Zealand (2004-09); and one Test for Samoa this year.
Roy said on joining the Wolves: “I’ve been at Souths for seven years and it’s now time to experience a bit of a change on the other side of the world in Super League and to experience the culture. With Warrington being a top three side in the competition who better to join for this opportunity than a team of that quality.
“I’m definitely excited; one door closes, another opens and I’m excited to becoming part of the Warrington team and getting involved with the boys and the fan base.”
Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith added: “We are delighted to add such a high quality player to an already very strong squad. To have a signing of this calibre join us with his international experience as well as having played for some top clubs in the NRL, his wealth of experience will be a fantastic addition. We are delighted and his qualities as a player and person will enhance our squad going forward.”
