Labour say no to Peel Hall plan

THREE Labour councillors have issued a joint statement, totally opposing the controversial development by Satnam to build 150 new homes at Peel Hall.
Poplars and Hulme ward councillors John Kerr-Brown, Steve Roberts and Brian Maher have jointly voiced their opposition to the development, which is also being opposed by Warrington North Labour MP Helens Jones, who has already gained more than 1,000 names on a protets petition.
Speaking on behalf of all three councillors, John Kerr-Brown (pictured) said: “We objected when Satnam first proposed the idea in 1992 and we fiercely object to this latest planning application.
“We urge residents to send their views to Steven Broomhead, Warrington council’s Interim Chief Executive as a matter of urgency.
“Having met with Michael Davies, the council’s senior planner, to voice our objections we have been informed that the planning application will not go to the Development Management Committee until late 2012 or even early in the New Year.
“However, the statutory consultation period ends on October 3 so people need to get their views registered quickly.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and when a date for committee is given we will call a public meeting for residents to air their views.”
Earlier this week developers Satnam announced submission of their planning application following feedback from the local community and included a £1m sports facility forWinwick Athletic FC
Club secretary Paul McMahon said it would “provide a once in a lifetime opportunity” which they needed to “seize with both hands.”
The proposals include up to 150 high-quality homes from new family houses to affordable properties to suit local needs, such as first time buyers struggling to get their foot on the housing ladder or key workers, such as teachers or nurses. Community allotments and orchards are also proposed as part of the scheme.
As part of the proposals, over £1million will be invested into the current playing fields site at Windermere Avenue, and will help Winwick Athletic Football Club to provide new and improved facilities, such as all weather floodlit pitches, new changing rooms and state-of-the-art facilities that will enable the club to expand and increase its accessibility to all those interested in sport.

  1. Sorry to dampen your optimism Fugtifino but the ‘news’ is not as good as it may at first appear. Note;- “Having met with Michael Davies, the council’s senior planner, to voice our objections we have been informed that the planning application will not go to the Development Management Committee until late 2012 or even early in the New Year.

“However, the statutory consultation period ends on October 3 so people need to get their views registered quickly.” Perhaps it should be asked why the consultation period ends on Oct 3 when “the planning application will not go to the Development Management Committee until late 2012 or even early in the New Year.” ??? If objections go in now this gives the developers 3-4 months to address any obstacles to their plans whilst also waiting for the proposed planning legislation changes to take effect (expected late 2012 early 2013).

  2. Experience by now should have taught us all in Warrington that all things planning related are never as cut and dried as they might seem – at first or at any time later. Was “Michael Davies, the council’s senior planner” whom Cllr John Kerr-Brown consulted, in the planning department when the statutory documents were destroyed on 2006?

  3. If the combined forces of Councillors Chris Vobe (Lab) and Sue Bland (Con) could not alter things on the development in Croft, what makes the Labour trio of John Kerr-Brown, Steve Roberts and Brian Maher, backed by Helen Jones MP think they can do any better against senior planner Michael Davies and SATNAM?
