£23m flood defence project starts

WORK is due to start on Monday on the £23 million Mersey Flood Defence scheme at Warrington – with traffic hold-ups almost inevitable.
A series of temporary driving restrictions, footpath and cycleway closures and suspension of a pedestrian crossing will come into force when work starts on the most “public facing” part of the scheme at Victoria Park, Warrington.
Road works are already going on in Knutsford Road, near the park, as new gas mains are being laid.
The driving bans – which relate to vehicle access to the park from Knutsford Road – and the suspension of the pedestrian crossing could last up to 18 months.
Footpath and cycleway closures are expected to last less than six months.
An alternative vehicle access to Victoria Park will be provided via Weir Lane.
Alternative footpath and cycleway routes will be signposted and will involve Knutsford Road, Grange Avenue and Stringer Crescent.
The restrictions will be in force when signs are displayed on site.
Work will also be carried out resurfacing adjacent carriageways and footways.
The Mersey Flood Defence scheme has been developed by the Environment Agency and will provide one in 100-year protection to a wide area of Warrington, including more than 2,000 homes and businesses.
The work in Knutsford Road is said to be the most “public facing” aspect of the scheme, involving a new and re-located entrance to Victoria Park.

  2. “The Mersey Flood Defence scheme has been developed by the Environment Agency and will provide one in 100-year protection to a wide area of Warrington, including more than 2,000 homes and businesses.” …..and probably even more prospective homes and businesses, so why didn’t they wait for the planning applications to come in and then get the money off the developers? As for the “public facing” aspect of the scheme”……what an ugly, bland, soul-less ‘no-where’s-ville’ design!

  3. They started to cut the beautiful willow tree down opposite our house today.

    Sheer vandalism.!!

Reminded me of the time a few years back when the council gave permission for the trees along Wilson Patten street to be felled. They were hundreds of years old . It makes me so sad.

  4. Congratulations.. Warrington now has its own 70s designer concrete homage… Over a 1000m of it. The design is dated and resembles the tiles in the bargain bin at B&Q…

Whoever signed off on that design really needs to look in the mirror and ask a simple question… Was I drinking when I said this was “just what we are looking for”… Waves and blue fishes and lets not forget the native kingfisher…. Hideous!!!
