A COLLECTION of photographs from family albums dating back 100 years illustrates how Warrington’s workplaces have changed over the years.
There are images showing unventilated factories full of dangerous machinery and hazardous chemicals and with employees working long hours in badly lit premises. This vanished era is shown in a new book entitled “Working Lives of Warrington” by Janice Hayes, principal manager of Warrington Museum, complementing the Story of Warrington exhibition which opened at the museum some months ago.
Working life was very different then, but despite this, Warrington proudly called itself “the town of many industries” with a varied economy. Nowadays Warrington is a thriving business and commercial centre with call centres, superstores and retail facilities.
Janice Hayes said: “This book gave us the chance to share many more fantastic photographs which local people have donated to the museum in recent years. Even now there will still be some firms we haven’t featured and we’re always interested to add new material to the collections.”
