A second half Skelmersdale penalty (pictured above) all but ended Warrington’s faint play-off hopes as they went down 1-0 at Cantilever Park.
Louis Corrigan was adjudged to have brought down Skelmersdale sub Chris Almond and Kyle Armstrong fired the resulting spot kick in to the top corner.
Town put up a stern performance and had two penalty shouts turned down by referee Bennett much to the annoyance of the home support.
The Yellows started brightly but gained no reward for their early possession. Sam Finley and Chris Gahgan fired over in the first quarter as Skelmersdale struggled to get a foothold in the game.
A scrappy midfield battle played out for the first half, with the uneven surface halting any attempts to get the ball down on the floor.
However, Skelmersdale could have lead 1-0 going in to the break as on 42 minutes Town keeper Paul Pritchard flapped at a corner and could only push the ball to the edge of the box, Skem captain Michael Burke lofting the ball goal wards but saw his effort clip the top of the bar.
Skelmersdale almost took the lead 3 minutes in to the second half as Ryan Wade raced on to a long ball down the right and put in a deep cross that Lewis Field could only get minimal contact on the ball and Town recovered to clear.
Town had their first chance of the second half on 50 minutes when Alan Collins burst through the Skelmersdale defence but fired high and wide of the target.
Ten minutes later and Town missed another chance to take the lead as Andrew Heald fired wide following a sweeping Town attack.
The 68th minute proved vital as Louis Corrigan brought down sub Chris Almond and Kyle Armstrong put the title chasers ahead.
A succession of late Warrington corners provided the home fans with hope but non came to any real chances and will once again rue not making their early possession count.
