Death of unsung Wire hero

WARRINGTON Wolves have have announced the death of former winger Mike Kelly describing him as one of the most-underated players of his time.
Mike aged 56, passed away late on Thursday night and the club pass on their condolences to his family and friends.
Mike was a winger with Warrington in the 1970s and 1980s, who signed from Crosfields ARLFC in March 1977. He made his first team debut on 1 April 1977, scoring a try on a 13-15 defeat at Castleford. He finished the season playing in the Premiership Trophy Final, which Warrington lost to St Helens.
Mike played in three more finals for Warrington, the 1979 John Player loss to Widnes, the 1981 Regal Trophy win over Barrow and the 1982 Lancashire Cup win over St Helens when he scored a try.
He was also a member of the young Warrington side that famously defeated the Australian touring side 15-12 in October 1978. Mike was a late replacement for Parry Gordon, as Warrington had to juggle their injury hit team.
Mike was one of the most under-rated players in his time at Wilderspool. He never let the side down and was nicknamed “Spider” because of his long arms.
Kelly made 135 appearances, scoring 33 tries in seven seasons at Wilderspool. His last appearance for Warrington was on 23 October 1983 in a defeat at Hull Kingston Rovers, when he scored the only four point try of his career.
Mike was an active member of the Warrington Past Players Association and had for many years assisted Warrington Wolves younger players with their sprint training.
