THE annual Civic Remembrance Day Service at St Mary’s Church, Lymm this year will be a special occasion this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the World War One armistice.
Members of the local community – individuals, organisations, homes and schools – are being asked to provide home-made poppies which will be displayed as a cascade of poppies at the church for the service on November 11.
The Rector, the Rev Bev Jameson, who recently accepted an invitation to become chaplain to the Lymm branch of the Royal British Legion, said:
“Making a personal poppy display would be a wonderful tribute from our community in Lymm. Please be involved and make as many poppies as you can so we can make a grand display for the Remembrance Service.
“I am so honoured and pleased to be chaplain to Lymm and district branch of the Royal British Legion.
“My grandfather fought in World War One, my father in World War Two and I always wear their medals on Remembrance Sunday.”
The poppies can be made of any material – knitted, tissue paper, cardboard, paper etc., and of any size but no larger than a diameter of 10cm.
People may make as many poppies as they wish and should be taken to the church in September and placed in the collection box at the back of the church
People are welcome to drop off their poppies earlier if they wish, but no later than September 22.
The church is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 10am and 12 noon and on Thursdays at 11.15am and Sundays at 11.30am at the end of morning service.
There will also be a Roll of Thanks displayed in the church for any organisation or any individual who wishes to have their name included as having provided poppies for the display. However, people can choose not to have their name included.
Tony Bone, president of the Royal British Legion Lymm and District Branch said “We think this is a great initiative to involve the local community with the remembrance of those brave and valiant men who lost their lives during the First World War so that we may live in peace.
“We really hope it is well supported and it is a great success.”
