DESPITE a second half fightback table topping Warrington Wolves suffered a surprise 36-28 defeat at Wakefield Wildcats.
Wolves’ boss Tony Smith was forced to reshuffle his half-backs with Stefan Ratchford withdrawing through illness.
The Wolves trailed 24-6 at the break and 30-6 early in the second half, before staging a fightback with four unanswered tries trailing 32-28 going into the final 10 minutes.
But a Ben Jones-Bishop try two minutes from time secured the victory for the home side who have experienced a resurgence under new Head Coach Chris Chester.
Jones-Bishop’s try came with Wakefield momentarily down to 11 men as Warrington were pushing to pull off a remarkable come back.
The hosts led 24-6 at the break, with tries from Matty Ashurst, Tom Johnstone and two from Craig Hall, while Joe Westerman responded for Wolves.
Ashurst went in again, only for Warrington to hit back with four unanswered tries through Daryl Clark, Kurt Gidley, Matty Russell and a second for Westerman before Jones-Bishop sealed victory.
Despite the defeat Warrington remain top of the table heading into Magic Weekend when they play Castleford in Newcastle next Saturday.
After the match Warrington coach Tony Smith said: “The first half hurt. Wakefield started really enthusiastically and cashed in on a couple of our errors.
“We left ourselves a fairly hefty hill to climb up and we nearly got to the top and had a look over the other side. We had an opportunity to get our noses in front but it was not meant to be. We had a few boys off their best today.”

As much as I love Daryl he bombed the easiest try in the world. He was celebrating before he scored

If Gidley hadn’t been sin binned we probably would’ve won that game. Ah well, we’re still top and showed great character today
