TOWN Hall planning chiefs at Warrington are seeking permission to partially demolish crow-stepped gables on historic Walton Hall – and reinstate them next year.
Some of the gables have already been taken down in the interests of public safety, according to planning officers.
Walton Hall is a Grade 2 Listed building constructed in 1863-1838.
An inspection carried out in February revealed the three of the gables on the south and wast elevations were in a poor state of repair, with the stability of areas of masonry causing concern. An exclusion zone was put in place and, in the interests of public safety, the upper sections of the gables were taken down pending rebuilding. A temporary lead capping was formed to protect the brickwork from water ingress.
Planners propose to use as much historic salvaged material as possible in the reconstruction. It is proposed to carry out the work in January-February next year, although it may be necessary to delay it to March, depending on the weather.
English Heritage say it is good the structural issues have been brought light and the proposals appear broadly acceptable in principle.
