THE M6 northbound was closed been junction 21 at Woolston and junction 21a at Croft following a multi-vehicle collision involving a HGV on Wednesday morning.
All lanes on the northbound carriageway were shut due to a jack-knifed lorry and diesel spillage, although one lane was opened at around 11.3oam.
It is believed a total of 10 vehicles, including two lorries and a van, were involved in the accident at around 8.30am.
Police have warned motorists to expect ‘significant’ delays, with queues tailing back to junction 20 at Lymm.
The impact is likely to last several hours after 400 litres of diesel spilled onto the carriageway.
There were no reports of anyone trapped in vehicles and there are believed to be no serious injuries.
Three people are believed to be suffering with minor injuries and have been handed into the care of paramedics.
Approximately 400 litres of diesel spilt onto the carriageway and a full closure was placed on the northbound carriageway, with one carriageway opening at around 11.3oam.
Crews are making the scene safe. The Environment Agency have been informed.
Police are in attendance and severe delays are expected and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Diversions were put in place via Woolston Grange Avenue and Birchwood Way.
