Why 2019 is an Exciting Cricket Year for North West England

0

2019 is an exciting year for the North West – especially when it comes to cricket. Several matches are set to take place at the Old Trafford Ground this year.

Domestically, there is all of Lancashire’s home games to look forward to but this year Old Trafford will be showcasing the highest level of cricket with an Ashes test and some of the 2019 World cup matches taking place in Manchester.

World Cup Fixtures

After 20 years, the ICC Cricket world cup returns to the Old Trafford. From the 16 June to the 9 July, the star players will compete for the most valuable trophy in the sport.

Old Trafford Cricket Ground will host England’s group fixture against Afghanistan and it will also host five other group fixtures and one of the Semi-Final’s.

Ashes Test

This year, the Old Trafford Cricket Ground will be the location for the fourth test match of the Ashes series.

It has been confirmed that this will be the penultimate stage of the five-match series. The last time Lancashire hosted an Ashes test in 2013, the home team won the series 3-0. England suffered a 4-0 defeat in Australia in 2018 and will be looking to get revenge.

Roses Matches

Lancashire will face Yorkshire in two matches this year: the Royal London One-Day Cup and the Vitality Twenty20 Blast. Although neither events will take place at the Old Trafford Ground, they are nonetheless important for North West cricket fans.

With batsmen Keaton Jennings and Haseeb Hameed – both of whom have played for England – could these matches reap results for the Lancashire cricket team?

Last year, the T20 Blast saw Lancashire lose in the semi-finals. But could this be the year where they claim the prize? At the very least, they stand a good chance of making it to the penultimate stage of the competition once again.

Both tournaments offer great potential for the Lancashire cricket club.

2019 promises a feast of events for cricket fans in the North West. Even better, many of these will take place within the region. Not often is there a chance to watch international cricket so close to home.
