MAJOR proposals for the redevelopment of Penketh High School have been submitted to Warrington planning chiefs – with a projected start date next summer.
The scheme will involve the demolition of all the existing buildings – said to be in a poor condition – and the construction of new buildings alongside enhanced sports facilities which will be available for community use.
But the school will be able to continue operating normally while the work goes on over a period of some four years.
The existing all-weather pitch, five-aside pitch and macadam netball court on the eastern side of the site will be retained. The new school buildings will primarily be three storeys in height.
A single-storey element will connect the main teaching block to the sports hall wing.
A report being studied by borough planners says the proposed development would achieve significant positive benefits for the community.
A existing public right of way through the school site will be retained, with a bridge connecting the two halves of the site.
The proposals do not involve any increase in pupil or staff numbers. The school would continue as an eight form entry, with 240 pupils in each year group.
Work is expected to start during next summer with the new school buildings opening during the 2028-2029 academic year. Work is expected to be completed by the Spring of 2030.
New trees will be planted throughout the site, including the street frontage and car parking areas, helping to soften the appearance of the development.
The new buildings have been designed with sustainability at their core and will achieve net zero carbon emissions when in operation.
