LIVEWIRE Warrington, on behalf of then borough council is to officially open its new third generation artificial grass pitch at Great Sankey Leisure Centre on Saturday.
The ceremony, at 9am, has been made possible by investment from the Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund.
The grant has enabled the organisation to install a state-of-the-art new all-weather playing surface, as well as new boundary fencing and floodlights set to improve safety at the Great Sankey site. This has replaced a sand-based pitch, which was no longer fit for purpose due to its age.
The new 3G pitch, which can be used all-year round in any weather, will benefit pupils at neighbouring Great Sankey High School as well as a number of local football clubs including: Whittle Hall JFC, Crosfields JFC and Matthiola JFC. With a particular focus on introducing more girls to football, Liverpool County FA expects to see an increase in Under-18 female participation of 159%.
The project was made possible thanks to a £302,184 grant from the Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund, which is delivered by the Football Foundation.
Founded in 2000, the Football Foundation is the largest sports charity in the UK funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government, via Sport England. It develops new and refurbished grassroots sports facilities in order to improve the quality and experience of playing sport at the grassroots level.
Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded over 17,000 grants worth more than £615m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £817m – £1.4bn of investment into the grassroots game.
