WARRINGTON Collegiate’s Health & social care student Mollie Moreton is celebrating after bucking the trend and securing a place to study midwifery at university, despite only being 17!
Most students have to complete an Access to HE qualification before being accepted into the competitive field of midwifery, but Mollie will be starting her training this coming September.
The former Irlam & Cadishead High pupil, who is almost at the end of her level 3 qualification in health & social care at Warrington Collegiate, described her acceptance as “overwhelming” and said she would never have been able to do it without the support and guidance of her tutors.
“It is so hard to get a place to study midwifery,” said Mollie. “Most people have to go on to study an Access to HE course so I have been really lucky to get a place straight from college. I didn’t think I would get in but I decided to go for it.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do this, and half of the stuff I have done, if it wasn’t for the help and support I’ve had from my tutors – they have pushed me and helped me to reach my goals.”
Mollie, who has completed work placements at GP surgeries, day nurseries and nursing homes during her time at Warrington Collegiate, added: “I’m so happy. When I went to Salford University for their open day, everyone else applying for the midwifery course was in their 20s, so I know I’m really lucky to have got to this stage before turning 18.”
Amanda Mackinnon, curriculum leader for health & social care and childcare at the college, said: “Mollie is an outstanding role model for the department and her fellow students. To be able to secure a place at university to study midwifery at 18 is extremely rare. Mollie has worked so incredibly hard this year and has fantastic grades – she deserves this opportunity and I know she will be a fantastic midwife in the future!”
