Planners defer decision on library shop proposal

THE controversial plan to change-the-use of a shop unit in Warrington’s Golden Square shopping centre for use as a library  failed to win approval from the borough council’s development management committee.

Councillors deferred a decision on the application to change the use of the former Funky Dory shoe shop after several members had called for more information.

Chairman Cllr Tony McCarthy said: “Several members expressed concern at the lack of information.
“They felt the shop was very small to accommodate a library – and some felt there was another larger more suitable vacant unit available.”

The plan came before the committee on the basis that there was “a strong likelihood” the occupier of the unit would be LiveWire – the borough’s library operator – with who the council has a close operational relationship.

Cllr McCarthy said: “It was clearly an emotive issue and councillors felt more information was needed.”
