RESIDENTS were evacuated from their homes at Warrington early today when a fire broke out involving gas cylinders.
Emergency services set up a 200-metre exclusion zone around the blaze in Molyneux Avenue, Bewsey, because of the risk of an explosion.
Three appliances from Warrington Fire Station were involved in the operation and police were involved in moving people from nearby houses.
A number of roads were closed and evacuated residents were taken to Bewsey Lodge Primary School where council officials set up a rest centre.
The operation is still going on and fire crews are playing hoses on the cylinders in an attempt to avoid an explosion.
A borough council spokeswoman said 30-40 residents were being accommodated at the school which would, as a result, would be closed today but would be open again tomorrow, despite the teachers’ strike
Fordton Leisure Centre was also on standby in case additional emergency accommodation was required.
It is expected to be 12 hours before the area around the fire is declared save.
The council has now down-graded the situation and are advising anyone requiring further information to ring the Contact Centre on 01925 442 233.
