MOTORISTS in Warrington are being warned to take extra care of their vehicles after reports of a spate of thefts from cars in the town.
Drivers are being advised by police to step up in-car security after a number of expensive items, including satellite navigation systems, were stolen.
The current car crime hot spot appears to be in the Kingsland Grange and Chesford Grange areas of Woolston.
PC Matt Gagen said: “Recently there has been an increase in the number of thefts from motor vehicles in the area – in particular sat navs that have been left on show. We are taking steps to address this with high-profile patrols that are targeting the areas most affected by this type of crime. We want to urge all drivers to take a minute and reassess their car security.”
Officers are urging motorists not to leave any valuables on display, not to “hide” equipment and valuables in the glove compartment or boot, and to remove all other tell-tale signs of expensive equipment, such as sat-nav and mobile phone holders.
PC Gagen added: “A lot of these offences are committed by opportunistic thieves who have spotted something on show inside a vehicle,” he said. “The best way to avoid this is to remove the opportunity. A car is less likely to become a target if there is nothing on show to attract their attention.
“Drivers need to be vigilant and to remember to remove all items of value from their vehicle while it is unattended – even if it is just for a few minutes.”
