Wolves Head Coach Paul Cullen slammed his side as ‘absolutely awful’ after they lost their unbeaten home record to a patched up Harlequins.
Second placed Wolves missed out on the chance of opening up a gap on the chasing pack as they got bogged down in the Halliwell Jones mud and one wonders if the match would have even taken place had it not been for the presence of the TV cameras.
Prop Gareth Haggerty scored his first try for Harlequins to help them into an 8-0 interval lead, and Paul Johnson’s try for the Wolves came too late to salvage the points.
“We were simply very poor,” said Cullen. “Our handling was poor and our completion was absolutely awful – and we paid the price for it.
“Unfortunately that was all we had left in us after the Easter period, but we’re not going to blame fatigue. That was a poor performance.
“Some of the mistakes we made were quite unbelievable. We lost our shape and we lost our structure – and from that we forced plays that were not working for us. We’re very frustrated.”
Already without five regulars through injury and suspension, Warrington lost centre Martin Gleeson with a pulled calf muscle three minutes into the second half.
But the Quins were also without six regulars but adapted better to the conditions with a workmanlike performance.
Meanwhile the Wolves failed to take advantage of a 2-1 penalty count in their favour with a poor completion rate. When they did make a break they took the wrong options, with Martin Gleeson and Andy Bracek both breaking clear but failing to find supporting players.
Warrington’s best player was skipper Adrian Morley who did not deserve to be on the losing side as he made good yards on numerous occasions in the muddy conditions.
