Man, 19, arrested on
suspicion of murder

A 19-year-old Warrington man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The man – together with a 17-year-old girl and a 53-year-old woman, both from Widnes – is being questioned in connection with the murder of 71-year-old Agnes Hanrahan.
Her body was found at her home in Baguley Avenue, Widnes, on December 9 last year.
Police the three suspects are also being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
They have not released the names of the three people.
Crofts Crufts win
at carnival

Thousands flocked to the annual Croft Carnival at the weekend as local organisations entered into the spirit of the occasion with a parade of floats through the village.
Despite blustery conditions the rain held off.
For the second year running Croft Primary School won the prize for the best dressed float.
Classroom assistant Gill Phythian is pictured entering the spirit occasion as a “Pink Poodle” from Croft Crufts!
Kate MacDonald was crowned “Carnival Queen” while sisters Sian Abbott and Jade Abbott were crowned “Carnival Princess” and “Rosebud.”

at Pyramid?

THE world class Methodist collection of modern Christian art will be exhibited at the Pyramid arts centre throughout July and August.
This special art exhibition is in association with Warrington?s faith communities.
It will be held on Sunday July 4 until Thursday August 26, from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 9am and 5pm and some evenings.
The event also includes weekly opportunities for both worship and reflection, occasional events and workshops with satellite programmes at Golden Square, the Methodist Mission and Warrington Museum.

Pupils will win prizes
for getting up early!

PUPILS at a Warrington school are being urged to get up on time this week as the school embarks on a drive to promote and reward good attendance.
William Beamont Community School and Specialist Sports College are monitoring attendance for a week as part of an ongoing positive package of methods to promote and encourage good attendance at school.
In each year group forms will receive prizes for being the most improved and for the form with the best attendance rate, whilst individuals also have the chance to win a wide range of prizes.
The initiative is supported by many local businesses and organisations through sponsorship such as WH Smiths and Latifs, whilst Warrington Collegiate continue to support this venture by giving prizes for parents.
Next week pupils will attend a presentation ceremony when those who have achieved 100 per cent attendance during the week will receive prizes including WH Smith vouchers, JJB Sports vouchers, dictionaries, mini rugby balls, note books and sports bags.
Deputy head Kath Buckley said: “This is the seventh time we have organised an Attendance Week. The previous weeks have been a great success and have really helped to improve and encourage good attendance at school. We are hoping that all pupils and parents will join in the fun and positive spirit of the week and show people how good attendance is within our school. So far our initiatives have increased our attendance by 3 per cent over last years figures.”
Carnival gives local
charities a boost

CLOWNS, face painting, military vehicles and falconry were among the attractions at Penketh Carnival, near Warrington.
Music was provided by Penketh High School Jazz Band.
The event also offered a chance for local and national charities to showcase their activities, including Macmillan Nurses, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Penketh Day Centre and the RSPCA.
Warrington South MP Helen Southworth dropped in on the event and was full of praise for the organisers and the charities.
She said: “Events like this give a shop window for many local organisations and charities. Local people come together to put on entertainment and showcase what is happening in Penketh. Even a downpour couldn’t dampen anybody’s spirits.”
Mrs Southworth visited the carnival with local borough councillors Linda Dirir and George Warburton and parish council chairman Anne Milling.
Flower festival will
send cash to Sudan

A FLOWER festival at St Monica’s Church, Appleton, near Warrington will raise money to be sent to the Sudan appeal.
The festival will open on Friday, July 16 and run for three days, with exhibits by local florists and members of the parish on the theme “Praise.”
There will also be musical recitals and other events for visitors to enjoy.
Organiser Dave Jack said that there had been tremendous support from the parish for the event. Support during the event will also be provided by the PTA of St Monica’s School and also from the Parish Youth Group.
Co – Organiser Joan Appleton said this was the first Flower Festival in the parish and everyone hoped that it would become an regular event.
She noted that any profits from the event would be sent to the Sudan appeal to support what UN emergency co-ordinator Jan England had described as “the .biggest humanitarian drama of our time.”
Dave and Joan also hoped that the people of Warrington would visit the church to enjoy the beautiful flower displays.
The festival will be open each day from 10am to 4:00pm admission ?2.00 – concessions free.
