Celebrations over Nobel prize award

SCIENTISTS at the Daresbury Laboratory, near Warrington, are among those celebrating the award of the Nobel Science prize to Professor Peter Higgs and Francois Englert for the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle – sometimes referred to as “The God Particle”
UK universities – particularly those in the North West – made a significant contribution to making the discovery possible.
Professor Swapan Chattopadhyay, director of The Cockcroft Institute of Accelerator Science and Technology at Daresbury said: “This is great news for UK scientists and engineers. I hope this validates the value of fundamental research and one of its prime enablers, large scale facilities exploiting accelerator science and technology to which our institute is devoted.”
The University of Liverpool’s Dr Tara Shears, a researcher at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, said: “I’m so excited that this year’s prize has been awarded for the Higgs theory, and that Peter Higgs and François Englert have been recognised. Predicting, and then discovering the Higgs Boson is one of the very greatest achievements of modern physics. It’s a wonderful idea that opens our eyes to the deepest nature of the universe. That it has turned out to be true has been one of the most amazing things I’ve ever witnessed.”
Professor Stefan Soldner-Rembold, Head of Group at the University of Manchester, said: “Rarely has the award of a Nobel Prize been so universally expected. The journey from Peter Higgs’ original prediction 50 years ago to the discovery of the Higgs particle last year has been a triumph of theoretical and experimental physics. The discovery of the Higgs boson answers one of the most fundamental questions about the properties of matter in the Universe. Physicists from the UK have played a leading role in building the large experiments that have made this triumph of Higgs’ theory possible.”
STFC has a long standing relationship with CERN, and last year STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory announced the launch of its new STFC CERN Business Incubation Scheme (STFC CERN BIC), that will allow UK-based entrepreneurs and small businesses to take ideas from some of the world’s most innovative technologies developed at CERN, and translate them into marketable services and products. The first successful tenants to enter the STFC CERN BIC at Daresbury are expected to be announced within the next couple of months.
