MP Helen Jones and four borough councillors at Warrington have explained why they have refused to have talks with developers who want to build 150 houses at Peel Hall.
All five say no negotiations are possible with developers Satnam Millennium.
The Warrington North MP (pictured) said: “Satnam seem unable to understand the simple fact that there is no room for
negotiation on this matter.
“I am opposed to any development on the site and the vast majority of the public in the area, who will be most affected, are opposed to it.
“I made a pledge to my voters that I would oppose any plans for development at Peel Hall and I intend to stick to that pledge. That is my publicly stated position and I would have thought it self-evident that there is nothing to talk about. I fail to see what is so difficult for them to grasp with that position.”
In the joint statement, the four councillors, John Kerr-Brown, Steve Roberts, Brian Maher and Billy Lines-Rowlands said: “We fought elections on the basis that we would oppose developing Peel Hall.
“The public living in the area have indicated, in massive numbers and on several occasions, that they are opposed to any development and we will continue to reflect the views of the people who elected us.”
Earlier, Satnam had expressed disappointment that the MP and councillors had refused to “engage” with them.
Spokesman Colin Griffiths said; “We are committed to working with all interested parties on this development to ensure that the best possible scheme is delivered. Our open invitation for them to meet with us and discuss their issues and concerns still stands.”
Satnam have made a presentation to Winwick Parish Council showing their proposals for 150 high-quality family homes, as well as about 45 units of affordable properties to suit local needs, such as first-time buyers.
The proposals would also include a £1 million investment in playing fields at Windermere Avenue, enabling Winwick Athletic Football Club to provide new and improved facilities.
These could include all-weather floodlit pitches, new changing rooms and state-of-the-art facilities.
Mr Griffiths said: “We were grateful for the opportunity to present our proposals to the parish council and we hope that we were able to address some of their concerns, such as the status of the site.
“Some members of the council seemed to be under the impression that the site is in the Green Belt, which it is not, nor has it ever been.
“We were also able to answer other questions such as those on the provision of affordable housing and how the local highways network will cope with the development.”
The plans are available to view online at Warrington Borough Council’s website and a dedicated community information line is also available for those who want to discuss the plans on 0161 247 8417.
