FORMER Warrington Wolves and England international Mike Cooper has been handed an 18-month suspended prison sentence after being convicted of stalking his former partner and her friend.
Cooper, 37, was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court today (Friday) after the court heard details of a “terrifying” two-month campaign between October 21 and December 31, 2024.
The Warrington-born former prop repeatedly contacted the man he believed his former partner had started a relationship with, using various Facebook accounts and sending threatening messages.
He also attended his former partner’s home, left handwritten notes and damaged her car, including scratching abusive words into it and damaging its tyres.
Cooper’s defence told the court that he had been “destabilised” by the end of his rugby league career and a brain injury, with his forced retirement in September 2024 followed by a period of heavy drinking while taking prescription medication.
Judge Swinnerton noted that Cooper had not physically assaulted either victim and that there had been no reported domestic violence during his relationship with his former partner.
The 18-month prison sentence was suspended for two years because of Cooper’s realistic prospect of rehabilitation.
He must also complete up to 20 rehabilitation activity days and a Skills for Relationships programme.
A ten-year restraining order has been imposed to protect both victims.
Cooper made more than 200 appearances during a professional career which included spells with Warrington Wolves, Castleford Tigers and Wigan Warriors, as well as playing in the NRL for St George Illawarra Dragons. He retired from professional rugby league in 2024.
