WARRINGTON MPs Charlotte Nichols and Sarah Hall have both welcomed the Prime Minister’s decision to resign in the “best interests of the country”.

Both MPs were amongst the 100-plus Labour MPs who had been lobbying for the Prime Minister to stand down.

Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols MP said:” This was the right decision, in both the interest of the country and of our party, and I hope over the coming weeks as the transition to a new leader begins that the debate we need to have about the necessary change of direction can take place constructively, orderly and calmly.
“Whatever our disagreements, I am grateful to Keir for steering the party from our worst election defeat in 2019 to coming into Government in 2024, and I do not envy either the scale of the challenges he has had to face in the role of Prime Minister or the impact that it has had on his family. I wish him and his loved ones well as he prepares to leave office and begin the next chapter of his life.”
Warrington South MP Sarah Hall added: ”Keir Starmer has today announced his resignation as Prime Minister.
“This cannot have been an easy decision, but I believe it is the right one for the country.
“I am pleased that Andy Burnham has announced that he will put himself forward to lead our party and become the next Prime Minister. Andy has my full support.
“Andy has shown a deep commitment to the North and to towns like Warrington. He understands that Labour only succeeds when it is rooted in the lives and aspirations of the people we serve.
“As we begin this next chapter, Labour must look forward with purpose and determination. We must be bold in our ambitions, unapologetic in standing up for working people and focused on delivering the change people were promised.
“That means reconnecting with the communities we were founded to serve and showing once again that Labour is at its best when it governs with conviction, purpose and courage.”
