Wolves coast in to Challenge Cup quarter-finals

WARRINGTON Wolves eased in to the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup with a 78-10 win over Championship side Goole.

In a first meeting for 126 years, with Goole having only re-entered the professional ranks ahead of last season after more than 120 years, Warrington were able to rest a few players and still canter to victory.

There was a try on debut for young winger Lachlan Webster, and the Wolves were already 48-6 to the good when he scored five minutes in to the second half.

The opening try went to Josh Thewlis, before Goole surprised Warrington with a levelling score, Australian centre Cooper Howlett scoring after they had recovered a short kick-off.

That proved a mere blip as Jake Thewlis scored the first of his two tries, and Josh Smith, Max Wood, Jordan Crowther and Danny Walker all crossed in the first half as Warrington went at more than a point a minute.

Four of those tries came in the final 14 minutes of the first half, with Ewan Irwin converting all seven first half tries for 42-6.

The procession continued, three more tries added in the first 16 minutes for James Harrison, Webster and Ben Hartill.

Leon Hayes came off the bench to score, and Irwin crossed for a try of his own as he ended with a personal points haul of 30.
