Artifical grass pitch plan for Woolston Playing Fields

2

PLANS for an artificial grass sports pitch, a car park extension and associated infrastructure on Woolston Playing Fields, off Hillock Lane, Wooiston have been submitted to Warrington Borough Council.

The application comes from housebuilder Barratt and David Wilson Homes and the University of Chester – owners of the former Padgate Campus where the housebuilder is to carry out residential development.
Existing sports facilities on the campus site will be lost as a result of the development and will be replaced by improvements to sports facilities on four sites across the borough, including Woolston playing fields.
Discussions have taken place with the Football Foundation, the Rugby Football League, Warrington Wolves, Warrington Wolves Community Foundation, Sport England and the borough council.
The new artificial grass pitch will be located on an area of existing grass playing field used as a training pitch and will be designed to minimise loss of grass playing field.
Existing car parking for 39 vehicdles will be increased to 89 spaces.
Planning officers are currently considering the proposals.

  1. Interesting to see another site like Victoria park that floods because of its high water table. In fact the flood defence s of Victoria Park were designed by the Environmental Agency to hold the flood waters behind the walls and trap it in the park like a basin holds water
Hence the new stadium is built on concrete stilts

  2. I was talking to a former English Athletic Development officer and Rylands junior rugby league player. He was surprised that the Rylands Football Club had been overlooked. They have a pitch on Crab Lane opposite the college where the new home are to be built. He remembers well the issues of surface water at Woolston
He used to visit athletic clubs in the North of England like Warrington Athletic Club and help them with their bids to improve facilities and club management. He also mentioned the issues with artificial surfaces that have to be considered like their roots and leaves such as the one propose at Victoria Park next to the Spirit Restaurant a listed building that may be touched by this application
