WARRINGTON-based national social care charity Making Space has launched its Care at Christmas Appeal, encouraging local people to look after their own wellbeing while helping others this festive season.
At the heart of the appeal is a simple message: care for yourself, while helping to care for others.
Making Space, whose head office is on Allen Street, Warrington, supports people living with mental health conditions, learning disabilities, dementia and complex care needs – as well as the carers and families around them.
Fundraising manager Bob Towers said: “We know the festive season can be a difficult time for many. While it’s a time of joy for some, it can also bring extra pressures – from loneliness and stress to emotional and financial worries, especially for many of the people we support. That’s why we’re asking everyone to Care at Christmas – to look after your own wellbeing while helping us care for others. Many of those we support will spend Christmas alone. Some won’t see family or friends, receive a gift, or share a hot meal without a little extra help.”
This year’s Making Space Christmas cards have been designed by two talented young carers, aged 10 and 15, supported through the Cheshire East All Age Carers Hub.
The younger winner said: “I liked making the design because I used a few art techniques that I don’t usually use, and I really enjoyed it. When I won, I felt amazed!”
The 15-year-old designer added: “I really enjoyed creating this Christmas card, it inspired me to make more and got me in the Christmas mood! It’s encouraged me to try different things with art and express my passion further. Thank you so much for choosing my design as the winner!”
Each pack contains 10 cards (five of each design) and costs just £5, with every penny raised helping Making Space bring comfort, connection and care to people who may be struggling this Christmas. You can order online at https://fundraising.makingspace.co.uk/shop/making-space-christmas-cards
As part of the appeal, Making Space is inviting people to take on a self-care fundraising challenge — something that boosts your own wellbeing while raising funds to support others. Ideas include: Walking or running 10,000 steps a day in December (or setting a daily target that works for you)
• Hosting a coffee morning or festive quiz
• Taking a break from alcohol, chocolate or social media
• Learning a new skill in time for Christmas
Funds raised will support projects and services across the country, including those in Warrington, where donations have already made a real difference.
In Warrington, Making Space has used fundraised income to teach people with mental health challenges how to cook healthy, affordable meals.
Across the UK, donations have also helped carers and people supported by Making Space to buy essentials, access wellbeing activities and enjoy social connection.
Every contribution, whether buying a pack of Christmas cards, donating online or taking part in a fundraising challenge, helps ensure no one feels forgotten this Christmas. To find out more, visit www.makingspace.co.uk or email fundraising@makingspace.co.uk.
