What should be happening is the post of CEO should be deleted from the establishment. Other Local Authorities are taking this bold step. The deletion of that post together with the other posts in the department would release substantial funds for front line services. We can all live in hope!
I’m afraid that on the day the posts of Town Clerks morphed into Local Government Chief Executive Officers things started to go pear shaped in Local Government. LG CEOs considered their pay levels should be on a par with CEOs in the private sector, overlooking the fact they did not have to make a profit or face even a smidgen of the risks their private sector counterparts. Put simply they were molly coddled by comparison yet they demanded the same level of renumeration. Our out going CEO is a case in point. The Government Localism Bill is an opportunity to be more realistic on the renumeration of LG CEOs and other senior council officers but the title of this article suggests otherwise. For too long now salary levels of these people has risen exponentially whereas skill levels have been on the decline.
