Warrington VIP centre holds family and community day

AN opportunity to learn about the work of the Warrington VIP Centre came when the charity held its first family and community open day at The Old School, Fairfield Street.

The event gave local people, families and supporters a chance to visit the centre, meet the team and learn more about the charity’s work with local  people living with sight loss.

The VIP – Visually Impaired People – has been helping people with sight loss since 1923 so the open day enabled long-standing members to meet newcomers.

Guests were personally welcomed by CEO Fiona Pattersonand deputy CEO Vicky James, who were both on hand throughout the afternoon to greet visitors, chat about VIP’s services, and introduce some of the charity’s  volunteers and partners.

Fiona Patterson said: “We wanted to open our doors and invite the community in, to show what VIP is all about, it was lovely to meet people that were not members of VIP.

“I met a lovely couple who were saying that people don’t understand what macular degeneration is  and how it affects their vision.  I gave them a pair of simulator specs for them to share with family and friends to enable them to visualise age related macular degeneration. “

There was plenty to enjoy on the day, with friendly volunteers, lively conversations, and a delicious selection of homemade cakes and refreshments. Visitors also had the chance to hear from and chat with local organisations who work with VIP.

The day aimed to raise awareness of the support VIP offers to visually impaired people in Warrington  from peer support and group sessions to digital inclusion and social events.

Warrington VIP has exciting plans ahead, with new partnerships developing across the borough and recently secured funding set streamline and strengthen the services it provides. These next steps will enable the charity to enhance the support and opportunities it provides, while also expanding its reach, all with the aim of improving the lives of people living with sight loss in Warrington.

There are also plans to grow VIP’s volunteering programme, offering local people the chance to get involved in meaningful, rewarding roles — from helping in the kitchen or garden, to providing digital support, or simply offering a listening ear and some friendly company.
