Effective policing cuts crime

THE chairman of Cheshire Police Authority has welcomed figures which show there were 3,700 fewer victims of crime in the county compared to the previous 12 months.
Margaret Ollerenshaw said: “The continuing reduction in crime shows that the public is being provided with effective and efficient policing at a time when there is considerable pressure on police finances.”
The figures, produced by the British Crime Survey, were revealed in Warrington-Worldwide yesterday.
Ms Ollerenshaw said: “It is particularly good to see that crimes such as burglary and car crime, which can seriously affect people’s everyday lives, have been reduced again.
“Although the Police Authority’s role will be taken over by a new Police and Crime Commissioner in November, members of the authority are determined that policing will continue to improve in the future.
“We are working with the Chief Constable, Dave Whatton, to ensure that the Constabulary is on a sound base to ensure that happens.”
The figures showed a decrease of six per cent in recorded crime across Cheshire for the 12 months up to the end of 2011.
Violent crime was down by 11 per cent, with almost 700 fewer offences.
The number of homes suffering a burglary was reduced by 298- a fall of eight per cent. Car crime was down by eleven per cent, with 700 fewer offences.
