SLEEPING Beauty had a rude awakening- and it wasn’t a wicked fairy or the evil queen to blame but the staff of Warrington Museum!
Fortunately the Sleeping Beauty in question is the subject of Edward Brewtnall’s magnificent pre-Raphaelite style painting, which has returned to the town’s main art gallery after more than 20 years at Walton Hall.
The museum team were entrusted with the delicate task of manoeuvring the large oil painting into place and it’s safe to say they would have welcomed a magic wand to make light work of the operation, which took several hours.
The Victorian gem is taking pride of place in the new “Inspired” exhibition showcasing the best of the town’s art collection.
More importantly Brewtnall’s work is back in the building where he began his art career at Warrington School of Art in the early 1860s before achieving popularity in London.
The painting is the artist’s largest and most impressive work and as the country falls under the spell of fairy tales again, Sleeping Beauty can live happily ever after in Warrington.
The Museum and Art Gallery is open from Monday to Friday, 10am – 4:30pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.
