THE 4th annual Big Lunch coincides with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend – and picnics and fun-filled street parties will be on the menu in Warrington.
On Sunday, June 3, the borough council is planning to serve up a giant 1950s- style community event in the town centre.
Tables and chairs, decorations and entertainment will be provided, all guests need to bring is themselves and some food!
To help support community events throughout Cheshire, the Westminster Foundation has donated funding to the Cheshire Community Foundation, £10 000 of which will help to fund both a town centre lunch extravaganza and a number of other local events in Warrington.
Grants of £100 will be available to individuals and groups to put on a tasty treat in their local area.
The funding will support up to four events in each parish area and eight in the unparished areas.
Deadline for applications to be received is Friday March 30 and the grants will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of the borough council said: “I would encourage everyone in Warrington to get involved in some way, whether it’s helping to organise an event in your community or going along to the one in the town centre to celebrate this historic day.”

*The Big Lunch was founded in 2009 by Cornwall’s Eden Project. Last year, around two million people are believed to have taken part, nationwide.

My recollection of Warrington is that you have some pretty sizeable people, and the last thing that they need is a “big lunch”. Maybe the big lunch should be based on the type and quantity of food that was available in the UK in 1952. Food rationing in the UK did not fully end until 1954. In 1952, meat, sugar and butter were still rationed and obesity rarely existed.
