A WOMAN falsely claimed more than £10,800 in benefit over a period of 15 months, magistrates heard at Warrington.
Cheryl Richards, aged 40, from Capenhurst Avenue, Fearnhead pleaded guilty to failing to declare that her husband was living with her between January, 2010 and March last year.
The court was told that during this time she falsely claimed benefit and was overpaid income support of £4,125, housing benefit of £5,429 and council tax benefit of £1,255.
She was sentenced to a 100-hour community punishment order, ordered to pay £100 costs and to repay the overpayment.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, Warrington Borough Council’s benefits manager said: “Expenditure on benefits is under more scrutiny than ever before. That’s why it’s important we reduce the theft of state benefits.”
