WORK is underway to prevent vehicles from parking at a bus stop at Risley, Warrington, following concerns raised by local residents.
Residents living near the bus stop in Warrington Road, near the Trident Business Park, have become increasingly worried that lorries and other vehicles park, sometimes overnight, presenting a serious risk to people who use the buses including children going to school and colleges across Warrington.
One local resident said: “Earlier this year a new bus shelter was destroyed by a bus and is awaiting replacement. Due to the vehicles parking in the bus stop, usually to access the SPAR shop or to prevent paying the £10 a day parking cost in Birchwood Park, means that the buses cannot pull into the bus stop and are left with no other option but to stop in the road. This increases risks to people and other vehicles on the road as passengers have to step onto the road assuming they can flag the bus down as the bus drivers view is obscured by the parked vehicles so may not see people waiting for the bus .
Cllr David Ellis from Birchwood Parish Council was instrumental in replacing the bus stop post and is in the process of restoring the actual shelter and to get the bus stop appropriately marked with the addition of double yellow lines .

A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “Following the bus shelter on Warrington Road being damaged in a road traffic accident, it has had to be removed and a replacement bus shelter will be installed soon.
“We are aware of the issues with vehicles stopping and parking in the layby which can restrict bus access. We have plans to introduce a bus stop clearway for this area, which will make all stopping and parking an offence which can be enforced by our civil enforcement officers.”
