MP fights for bowling greens

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones has helped launch a Bill in the House of Commons to protect bowling greens from being redeveloped or bulldozed.
She co-sponsored the Protection of Bowling Greens (Development Control) Bill.
Ms Jones said: “Bowling is enjoyed by many people in Warrington and is regularly played by more than 400,000 people across the country.
“I think what makes bowling such a popular sport is the social interaction that comes with it, particularly for older people.
“This Bill is an attempt to help bowling clubs fight back against the threat of greens being sold off and dug up for redevelopment. It calls for tighter local planning rules to protect greens that are still in use.
“I also want to see clubs and communities given the right to buy greens and the opportunity to operate them as co-operatives.
“Bowling is an important part of many people’s lives and is a part of what makes our communities strong. I hope that this Bill will preserve bowling in Warrington for a long time to come.”
The Bill will receive its second reading on Friday July 1.
