Backlash after MP accused of being drunk on flight to Gibraltar for official Remembrance event

WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols is one of three MPs facing a backlash today after allegedly becoming drunk on a flight to Gibraltar for an official Remembrance Day visit.

Ms Nichols, who is chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Pubs, has blamed medication for affecting her tolerance after being reported as having to be taken out of the airport in a wheelchair.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has accused Labour’s Ms Nichols and the SNP’s David Linden and Drew Hendry of showing a ‘lack of respect’ for the Armed Forces after the ‘drunken’ display.

Ms Nichols, who had to return from the event early, says she had fewer than five drinks, blaming her medication after reportedly becoming too incapacitated to attend the welcome party on arrival on the British Overseas Territory. She has since returned home two days early.

It has been alleged that the two SNP MPs were ‘lairy’ and ‘rude’ with airport officials and needed military staff to calm them down.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Ms Nichols required a wheelchair to make her way from the baggage claim to a military minibus.

Mr Wallace has said the trio’s conduct risked ‘undermining respect for Parliament’.

  2. No excuses, if she’s taking medication that can effect her tolerance to alcohol then don’t drink it, simple as. Her excuse is very poor and she shows an utter lack of respect,or judgment and she needs to grow up and take responsibility for her own actions, she cannot even remember how many drinks she had so it shows just how intoxicated she was (oh but it was less then five she believes – yeah right) Shame on her !
