POLICE are urging parents to remind their children of the dangers of swimming in the Manchester Ship Canal following ongoing issues of youths gathering at the historic Penny Ferry.
Since February police have received reports of youths gathering at the Penny Ferry, between Latchford and Thelwall on the Manchester Ship Canal, despite work done by Peel to secure the area.
Police are warning parents that the water is stagnant and dangerous.
A Police spokesperson said: “It is a shipping lane, with oil and industrial waste mixed with domestic waste. Coupled with wildlife waste including rats, urine and effluents.
“Please dissuade your child before they get seriously ill.”
Last August police had to issue a dispersal order to prevent teenagers congregating at the historic Thelwall Ferry site, implemented in order to stop youngsters travelling to the area to congregate.
