THE Union flag on Warrington Cenotaph is now flying at half-mast in honour of second-world war veteran Captain Sir Tom Moore who has sadly died today aged 100, after testing positive for COVID-19.
Cenotaph campaigner Julie Francis decided to fly the flag at half mast in honour of the British Second World War veteran was knighted by the Queen in 2020 after raising nearly £33 million for NHS charities during the first lockdown in the UK.
“As soon as I heard the sad news I decided to fly the flag at half-mast – it seemed the right thing to do in honour of such a remarkable veteran who inspired so many people,” said Julie.
“I arranged for a local veteran to come along to the cenotaph and fly the flag at half-mast.”
The Union Flag at Warrington Town Hall is also being flown at half-mast in honour of the “inspirational” Captain.
Captan Sir Tom inspired the nation and people around the world after completing 100 laps of his garden on his walking frame, initially aiming to raise £1,000 for the NHS to mark his 100th birthday.
Capturing the hearts and minds of people around the world he went on to raise over £30m.
He died at a hospital near his home in Bedfordshire after being admitted on Sunday.
He tested positive for Covid-19 last week and his family said due to other medication he was receiving for pneumonia, he was unable to be vaccinated.
