Warrington school wins award in “education oscars”

A WARRINGTON school won a prestigious award at the Tes Schools Awards – one of the biggest nights in the UK education calendar.
Penketh High School was named Maths team of the Year – just five years after receiving a negative Ofsted report.
The judges said the school had made enormous improvements to its maths teaching since 2015 having established a new marking and feedback policy, a new homework scheme and a restructured curriculum.
Maths has now become the best performing English Baccalaureate subject in the school and, most importantly, the team has gained strength, becoming what the assistant principal described in the award nomination as the best teaching team he had ever known or had the pleasure to be a part of.
Lead judge Jemma Sherwood, a head of maths herself, complimented the “huge” improvement made to the department.
Ian Farrar from Penketh High School said “We are privileged to have a team with such drive and dedication. They have delivered solid maths teaching and the results have been evident. They really do deserve this award.”
Chief judge of the Tes Schools Awards and editor of Tes magazine Ann Mroz said: “The Tes Schools Awards are the Oscars of education, recognising and celebrating everything that’s great about our schools and school staff.
“These awards are for the 2018-19 academic year. It’s evident from the entries how hard and how imaginatively school staff were working to give children a great education. Since then, of course, they have had a pandemic to contend with. But this has only served to underline their commitment to the children in their care. They have worked their socks off to make sure children are learning and are safe. So we congratulate all winners but we also salute each and every person working in our schools today.”
The Tes Schools Awards were held virtually for the first time to comply with coronavirus regulations. In previous years the awards ceremony has been held at the Grosvenor Hotel, on London’s Park Lane.
