Charlotte Nichols MP recently joined Power Hockey at Padgate Academy Sports Hall to get involved and play the sport.
Power hockey is the powered-wheelchair version of field hockey, first coming to Warrington earlier this year.
Players use powered wheelchairs with specialised bumpers which can trap, dribble, and shoot the ball to allow people of all ages who are physically disabled to play a fast-paced, dynamic contact sport.
Charlotte Nichols MP says: “Thank you to Warrington Power Sports Club for inviting me down to join a session of power hockey at Padgate Academy sports hall – I had a blast!”
“Having never used a power chair before, I was a bit nervous about my manoeuvring skills but that was reasonably quick to get to grips with and then it was just the small matter of bracing myself for the speed the other players were coming at me with!”
“The mental and physical health benefits of participating in sport, and particularly in team sports, are well-documented but often it is those who could benefit the most who face the biggest barriers to access and opportunity – so it’s really encouraging to see a greater variety of disability sport becoming available locally. Power sports are a great option for disabled people who can’t run or use manual wheelchairs to play fast paced, dynamic, competitive sport (including full contact), and have fun.”
Warrington Power Sports Club host a monthly Power Hockey session at Padgate Academy Sports Hall. If you would like to try it out and see if it’s something for you please see Warrington Power Sports Club’s Facebook page for upcoming sessions or email warringtonpowersportsclub@gmail.com for more information.
