THE annual Padgate and Woolston Walking Day was hailed an outstanding success over the weekend, drawing thousands to the streets for a spectacular celebration of local tradition, pride, and community spirit.

Organised by Poulton with Fearnhead Parish Council, the historic procession took place on Saturday afternoon under beautiful, clear sunny skies. The favourable summer weather provided the perfect backdrop for a vibrant display of togetherness, cementing the event’s status as a cherished fixture in the town’s social calendar.
Setting off at 2:30 pm from Bennetts Recreation Ground, the lively procession made its traditional journey down Blackbrook Avenue and Padgate Lane before circling back. This year’s numbers highlighted the scale of the event.
Over 1,000 active participants proudly took part in the main walk. More than 20 local organisations, including neighbourhood churches, local schools, and businesses, sponsored and joined the parade.

Thousands of spectators lined the designated pavements to cheer on loved ones and soak up the carnival-like atmosphere.
Multi-generational attendance ensured a safe, fully inclusive, and deeply enjoyable experience for attendees of all ages. The streets were alive with colour and music as community groups marched alongside local marching bands, showcasing the incredible pride that defines the Padgate and Woolston areas
The vast scale of the parade required a robust logistical operation, supported by temporary road closures managed between 1:45 pm and 4:30 pm. Following the event, the organising committee extended their sincere thanks to the army of volunteers, marshals, emergency services, and local businesses whose dedicated coordination kept the route safe and welcoming.
Reflecting on the overwhelming turnout, a spokesperson for the event organisers stated:”Walking Day continues to be one of the highlights of our community calendar. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to celebrate our traditions and support one another. The turnout was fantastic, the atmosphere was incredible, and we are grateful to everyone who played a part in making the day such a success.”

Beyond the immediate fun of the parade, the afternoon proved the lasting value of maintaining historic traditions that successfully span generations. By connecting young school children with elderly residents, the day reinforced a powerful sense of localised continuity and shared identity across Warrington. With the banners now packed away and the memory of a sun-drenched afternoon fresh in mind, planning is officially underway for next year’s event.
Organisers are already looking forward to welcoming an even greater number of participants and supporters to the streets in June 2027.
