Warrington marks St George’s Day with community celebration led by Mayor Mo Hussain

A special St George’s Day event, organised by the town’s Mayor, Cllr Mo Hussain, took place at Warrington town hall, ahead of another community event taking place this Saturday afternoon.

The celebration was designed to bring together people of all backgrounds in a shared display of national pride and local unity. The programme included a flag-raising ceremony, a performance by local school children, and a Viking re-enactment society locking horns with St George on the town hall lawns.

Mayor Hussain, who has made community cohesion a central theme of his mayoral year, invited residents, local businesses and community groups to take part in what he described as a “fantastic community event” celebrating England’s patron saint.

Commenting on the event: Cllr Hussain said: “What a fantastic day of celebration we had at the Town Hall to mark St George’s Day. It was wonderful to see so many people come together in such great spirit and pride for our town and country.
“We were honoured to welcome many dignitaries, including our Member of Parliament, Sarah Hall, the Senior Coroner, representatives from the police, the army, local schools, and many others from across the community.
“A special highlight was the brilliant performances throughout the morning. The Sacred Heart School Choir were outstanding, and it was a pleasure to present the pupils with certificates and goody bags in recognition of their wonderful singing. Megan Cerys-Holland’s performance of Jerusalem was absolutely incredible, made even more special as the flag was raised during her performance. The re-enactment performance from “Od Inn Born Warrington” was also fantastic. I think we can all agree we’re glad it was just an act and not the real thing!
“Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this special occasion. Events like this truly show the strength, unity and community spirit we are so proud of in Warrington.
“Our St George’s Day celebrations continue with a fun day this Saturday, everyone is welcome, and we look forward to seeing you there!”
The event takes place from 12pm to 4pm.
St George's Day
Since taking office in 2025, Mayor Hussain has been recognised for his long-standing commitment to community service and his efforts to bring people together across cultural and social divides. His leadership of the St George’s Day events reflects this broader vision of unity within the borough.
The mayoral role in Warrington is largely ceremonial but plays an important part in civic life, particularly in hosting events that promote community spirit and local identity.
This year’s St George’s Day celebration was widely seen as a success, with a strong turnout and positive feedback from attendees.
Organisers hope the event will continue to grow in future years, strengthening community ties.
