IN the ever-evolving landscape of Warrington’s independent music scene, few emerging acts have generated as much local buzz as Fordton Leisure.

Combining the sound of post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees and dark wave influences like Velvet Underground, New York Dolls and Bauhaus the band is quickly carving out a reputation for themselves as one of the town’s most exciting new talents.
Drawing inspiration from the raw energy of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Fordton Leisure channel a style defined by Nirvana like- driving basslines, angular guitar riffs, and a brooding, atmospheric edge to create a self-titled genre of Goth/Alt/Garage. Their music feels both nostalgic and contemporary, echoing the spirit of early alternative acts while bringing a modern intensity that resonates with today’s audiences. The result is a sound that is at once familiar and refreshingly urgent.
While their recorded output is still developing with 4 singles on their Spotify Channel (latest – ‘I Scream’), it is on stage where Fordton Leisure truly come into their own. Their live performances have been described as visceral and electrifying, capturing the kind of unfiltered energy that defined the original post-punk movement. Crowds are drawn into the momentum of their sets, often responding with the kind of movement and enthusiasm more commonly associated with the genre’s early days.
Forming in 2024 the band has become a regular presence within Warrington’s grassroots music circuit, performing at independent venues and sharing line-ups with other up-and-coming acts. Their involvement in local events and initiatives has positioned them as part of a wider resurgence of DIY music culture in the area—one that prioritises authenticity, community, and creative expression over commercial polish.
Even their name carries a sense of local identity. Fordton Leisure is a direct reference to the former Fordton Leisure Centre. By adopting the name, the band taps into a sense of nostalgia after the now-demolished community space was re-born into the bland corporate world of Costa, Greggs and yet another Aldi!
As they continue to build momentum, band members Stephen Smith (aka Leisure) on Lead vocals and Rhythm Guitar, Jean Hughes on Lead Guitar, Andy Richardson on Bass and Paul Goetz on Drums stand as a strong example of the creativity emerging from the town’s grassroots scene. With a distinctive sound, a growing live following, and deep local roots, they are definitely a band to watch—both within Warrington and beyond.
