A convicted killer who stabbed a Warrington man to death has been jailed for sexually abusing a young girl while released on licence.
John Thompson received a life sentence almost exactly 23 years ago after being convicted of the murder of a Warrington man at a North Wales caravan park.
Thompson, now 46, had denied murdering Gary Webb and the attempted murder of a park security guard in two frenzied knife attacks which occurred within minutes of each other in the summer of 200l in Towyn.
He was cleared of the attempted murder but convicted of wounding the guard, Derek Swindells, with intent. He received a minimum term of 14 years for the murder of Orford man Mr Webb, who was stabbed four times, and for which Thompson tried to blame his younger brother.
Liverpool Crown Court heard on Monday that Thompson, formerly of Pennsylvania Road, Tuebrook was recalled on licence the day after the child sex offences came to light on March 26, 2022.
Judge Denis Watson, KC, told Thompson, who appeared via video link from prison, that the offending involved “a degree of planning and grooming.”
He ordered him to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life and said that if the Parole Board ever releases him again he will still be on a life licence.
In an impact report the mum of his victim said that the girl now has trust issues and was worried about seeing him as he had told her not to tell anyone and she had. She had previously been “full of life, always joyful, resilient and happy” and was left suffering nightmares and flashbacks.
Thompson was convicted of three offences of sexual assault by touching and one of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child. He was cleared by the jury of seven other sexual offences against two other young children.
He was jailed for five years.
