Long-serving leaders step down as Warrington Ethnic Communities Association ushers in new era

THE Warrington Ethnic Communities Association (WECA) recently marked a significant transition as its long-serving Chairman, Mr. Hasan Kazi, and Secretary, Cllr. Mo Hussain, stepped down to make way for a new leadership team.

Cllr. Mo Hussain, who has been at the forefront of WECA’s growth and development for decades, leaves behind an inspiring legacy. Under his leadership, the association delivered over ten successful Melas—WECA’s flagship cultural festival—and established itself as a leading voice for Warrington’s diverse ethnic communities.

Reflecting on his time with the organisation, Cllr. Hussain, who is Deputy Mayor of Warrington said: “It’s been an honour to serve the community for so long. I am proud of what we have achieved together.”

Stepping into the role of Chairman is Cllr. Sageer Zaman, a founding member of WECA and a councillor representing Fairfield and Howley. He expressed his admiration for the outgoing leaders, saying, “Both Mr. Kazi and Cllr. Hussain have provided exceptional service to our community. I look forward to their continued support as we work together to build on their legacy.”
Dr. Priya Iyer, elected as the new Secretary, echoed this sense of optimism. She highlighted the importance of collaboration and inclusivity in her address to attendees, stating, “I ask for everyone’s help and support as we work together to further strengthen our cause.”

WECA, a registered charity approved by the government and local councils, was established in 2004 to act as an umbrella body for grassroots, community, and voluntary ethnic groups in Warrington. Over the years, it has gained recognition for its dedication to representing culturally diverse groups at strategic and community levels. The organisation works closely with statutory and non-statutory services to identify and address the needs of Warrington’s ethnic communities while advocating for positive change.
A highlight of WECA’s activities is the annual Mela, a vibrant cultural festival celebrated throughout Warrington and the North West. The Mela is a major event that brings together communities through music, dance, entertainment, and food from various cultures. It has become one of the most popular and inspiring events in the region, symbolising unity and diversity.

The AGM, attended by over 30 members representing Warrington’s culturally rich communities, also saw the election of Mr. Shejoo Verghase as Vice Chairman, representing the South Indian community. He won the position in a contested vote against Cllr. Kuldeep Dhillon of Birchwood.

Both Mr. Kazi and Cllr. Hussain pledged their continued support for WECA as it embarks on a new chapter. Cllr. Hussain affirmed his full backing of the new leadership, stating, “I am confident that the new team will continue to build on the foundation we have laid.”
With fresh leadership under Cllr. Zaman and Dr. Iyer, WECA is poised to continue its mission of fostering unity, promoting cultural diversity, and advocating for the needs of Warrington’s ethnic communities. As the organisation moves forward, its commitment to inclusivity and service promises a bright future for the community it represents.
